Planning your wedding in mauritius

What you need to know when planning a wedding in Mauritius

When thinking about or planning a magnificent Mauritius wedding, it pays to be prepared.

Legal status

Your marriage will be recognised in South Africa – as long as you submit your wedding certificate to Home Affairs, together with your antenuptial contract (which you can sign before leaving for Mauritius).

Beforehand

All you need to do before jetting off – after booking your trip, of course – is send original unabridged birth certificates to the Mauritian Home Affairs Department eight weeks in advance (we can assist with this) and obtain a certificate from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages stating that you are neither Mauritian citizens nor Mauritian residents. This certificate can be obtained beforehand by sending a request to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, 7th Floor, Emmanuel Anquetil Building, Port-Louis. You’ll also need to find a wedding dress and a suit for the groom.

Upon arrival

On your first working day in Mauritius, visit the Supreme Court and appear before a magistrate who will check your birth certificates and passports, ask you to declare that you are not already married, inform you that you cannot get married during your first three working days on the island and lodge your names in the marriage registry. Once approved by the authorities (i.e. after three working days), your wedding can be celebrated within 24 hours, except on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
